We use Read Write Inc. Phonics as a systematic programme to help our children acquire the necessary skills they need to become fluent and confident readers. This programme is used throughout Reception and Year 1 and as an intervention programme for Year 2 upwards allowing children to catch up quickly. When children have moved off the programme they begin to access our full literacy curriculum.
Our full literacy curriculum, draws on skills from Talk for Writing. Our teachers are encouraged to use a novel based approach and take stimulus from books that interest the children and also link to their topic. Using this is a base we develop the comprehension and understanding they need, being able to develop skills such as summarising, inferring and predicting to be able to become increasingly fluent readers who can read for purpose using a wider range of text types.
These reading skills are enhanced through our guided reading programme where children get the opportunity to access a range of texts from fiction to non-fiction. During a week they get chance to read both of these text types, firstly being supported by an adult where the focus is on discussion and identifying misconceptions before independently accessing them in a follow up sessions to demonstrate their understanding.
